If the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles has instructed you to complete a Driver Improvement Clinic, you must complete the required 8-hour Virginia Driver Improvement course within the deadline established by DMV.

How Demerit Points Can Trigger Virginia DMV Action
For drivers age 18 and older, Virginia DMV uses accumulated demerit points to determine when advisory, Driver Improvement and suspension actions occur.
DMV Advisory Letter
If you accumulate 8 demerit points in 12 months or 12 points in 24 months, DMV sends an advisory letter warning about the consequences of additional violations.
Driver Improvement Required
If you accumulate 12 demerit points in 12 months or 18 points in 24 months, DMV requires completion of a Driver Improvement Clinic.
The clinic must be satisfactorily completed within 90 days.
90-Day Suspension
If you accumulate 18 demerit points in 12 months or 24 points in 24 months, DMV suspends the driving privilege for 90 days.
Driver Improvement must also be completed before the privilege is restored.
What Happens If You Do Not Complete the Clinic?
Virginia DMV states that when it requires you to attend Driver Improvement, you must satisfactorily complete the entire eight-hour course.
If the clinic is not satisfactorily completed within the required 90-day period, your driving privilege will be suspended until the requirement is met.

Virginia DMV treats safe-driving points differently depending on the driver's age and reason for attendance.
Age 18 and Older
Virginia DMV states that safe-driving points are awarded to drivers age 18 and older when clinic attendance is DMV-required.
Under Age 18
Drivers under age 18 are not awarded safe-driving points when Driver Improvement attendance was required by DMV.

CDL Drivers Have a Separate Driver Improvement Requirement
If you hold a commercial driver's license or committed the applicable offense while operating a commercial motor vehicle, and DMV requires Driver Improvement, Virginia DMV requires completion of a Commercial Driver Improvement Clinic designed specifically for commercial drivers.
The regular classroom and online Driver Improvement options promoted on this website do not satisfy that separate commercial-driver requirement.
