Virginia Beach Driver Improvement and RADEP: What You May Need
A standard Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic and the Reckless and Aggressive Driver Education Program — RADEP are related, but they are not the same course requirement.
If your court, attorney, probation officer or other referring authority specifically tells you to complete RADEP or a 12-hour program, make sure you understand whether you need the complete program or only one component.
12 hours may mean the complete RADEP program.
4 hours may mean the supplemental RADEP component for a student who has already completed an acceptable 8-hour Driver Improvement course.
Driver Improvement and RADEP Are Related — But Not Interchangeable
The easiest way to understand the relationship is to separate the standard Driver Improvement course from the additional RADEP education.
8-Hour Virginia Driver Improvement
The standard Virginia Driver Improvement Clinic is an eight-hour traffic-safety course focused on safer driving practices, risk reduction and defensive driving.

Virginia RADEP
RADEP stands for the Reckless and Aggressive Driver Education Program.
The program adds education directed specifically toward reckless and aggressive driving behavior, including risk, attitude, decision-making, stress, anger and personal responsibility.

- Includes an 8-hour Driver Improvement component
- Adds a 4-hour reckless/aggressive-driver component

Which Course Does Your Paperwork Require?
Do not automatically choose the longest or shortest course. Match your registration to the exact requirement given to you.
8-Hour Driver Improvement Only
Choose the standard Driver Improvement course if your paperwork specifically requires an 8-hour Driver Improvement Clinic and does not require the additional RADEP component.
Complete RADEP Program
If you were instructed to complete the full 12-hour RADEP program, you need the complete requirement rather than only the standard eight-hour course.
4-Hour Supplemental RADEP
This pathway may fit a student who has already completed an acceptable 8-hour Driver Improvement course and only needs the additional RADEP component.
How the 12-Hour RADEP Pathway Fits Together
For Driver Training Solutions classroom students, the traditional 12-hour pathway is completed as two educational components.
Complete Part 1
Complete the 8-hour Virginia Driver Improvement course.
This provides the Driver Improvement component of the traditional classroom RADEP structure.
Complete Part 2
Complete the additional 4-hour Reckless & Aggressive Driver Education component.
This section focuses more directly on behavior, attitudes and risky driving decisions.
Complete the 12 Hours
When both accepted components are completed, the student has completed the traditional 12-hour RADEP structure.
Always follow the documentation instructions given by the court or referring authority.
You May Not Need to Repeat the First Eight Hours
Driver Training Solutions LLC accepts qualifying Virginia 8-hour Driver Improvement completion certificates from other schools for students seeking the additional 4-hour RADEP component.
That does not automatically mean the previous certificate will satisfy your individual court or referring-authority requirement. Confirm acceptance before registering.

Locate your previous 8-hour Virginia Driver Improvement completion documentation.
2. Confirm It Is Accepted
Make sure your court, attorney, probation officer or other referring authority will accept the prior completion.
3. Complete the Remaining Course
If accepted, you may be able to complete only the additional four-hour RADEP component.
Virginia RADEP Classroom and Online Pathways
The correct format depends on the requirement given to you. If online completion is involved, confirm that the court or other referring authority accepts online RADEP for your situation.
12-Hour Classroom RADEP
The classroom pathway combines the 8-hour Driver Improvement component with the additional four-hour reckless and aggressive driver education component.
Driver Training Solutions uses separate registrations for the classroom components.
Online RADEP Options
Online options are available for students whose court, attorney or other referring authority permits online RADEP completion.
Available pathways include a complete 12-hour online RADEP option and a 4-hour supplemental option for qualifying students.
RADEP and Virginia DMV Safe-Driving Points Are Not the Same Thing
Do not assume that completing RADEP automatically gives you five Virginia safe-driving points.
Virginia DMV point treatment is connected to the reason for completing the qualifying Driver Improvement component and the DMV rules that apply to that attendance.
Voluntary Driver Improvement
A qualifying voluntary 8-hour Driver Improvement completion may be eligible for Virginia safe-driving points under current DMV rules.
Court-Required Attendance
When a court requires Driver Improvement, Virginia DMV states that the court determines whether safe-driving points are awarded.
4-Hour RADEP Component
The supplemental four-hour RADEP course is not itself a standalone Virginia DMV Driver Improvement Clinic for safe-driving-point credit.
